Why Giving Direction Matters: How I Guide My Clients Toward Natural, Beautiful Moments

By Moses Slovatizki — Portraits San Diego

When people ask me what makes a portrait truly unforgettable, they’re usually expecting me to say something about lighting, camera gear, or the perfect San Diego backdrop. And while all of those things matter, they’re not the real secret. The heart of what I do—whether I’m photographing a wedding at Scripps Seaside Forum, a maternity session at Windansea Beach, or a family at Balboa Park—is direction. Gentle, intentional, confidence-building direction.

Many people think that portraits have to be staged or stiff, but the truth is the opposite. When the photographer takes ownership of guiding the moment with clarity and kindness, clients feel more comfortable, and comfort leads to authenticity. And authenticity is always beautiful.

In this blog, I want to share why giving direction matters, how I do it with a calm, soft-spoken approach, and why it truly transforms wedding portraits, maternity sessions, and family photography into something meaningful and unforgettable.

The Power of Direction in Wedding Portraits

Weddings are emotional, high-energy, and fast-moving. Most couples have never been photographed professionally, and almost every bride or groom will tell me the same thing:

“We’re awkward in photos—we don’t know what to do.”

My response is always the same:
“You don’t have to know. That’s my job.”

When a photographer takes control in a peaceful, confident way, everything shifts. Instead of guessing how to stand, where to put their hands, or how to look natural, couples can simply be present with each other. That presence shows up in every frame.

Why Direction Matters on a Wedding Day

  • It removes stress. There are already a hundred decisions to make on a wedding day—posing shouldn’t be one of them.

  • It creates trust. A couple who feels guided will relax, allowing emotions to surface naturally.

  • It speeds up timelines. With large bridal parties or tight schedules, clear direction keeps things flowing smoothly.

  • It elevates the quality of portraits. Subtle adjustments—chin angle, posture, hand placement, and movement—make a dramatic difference.

I guide couples into poses that feel natural and flattering. But then the magic comes when I give them prompts—not stiff instructions, but gentle movements that create genuine connection:

  • “Hold each other and breathe in together.”

  • “Walk slowly toward me and bump shoulders.”

  • “Whisper something meaningful to her—she’s the only one who’ll hear it.”

These subtle cues help release the nerves and shift the focus away from the camera and back onto each other. At the end of the day, couples aren’t remembering the pose—they’re remembering how they felt. My job is to make that feeling unforgettable.

Soft Guidance for Maternity Sessions: Honoring the Beauty of Expectancy

Maternity photography is one of the most delicate and emotionally rich experiences I get to create. A mother stepping in front of the camera during this season of her life is already carrying so much—excitement, anticipation, vulnerability, and physical change.

Direction is essential here, too, but it must be rooted in respect, softness, and dignity.

Why Direction Elevates Maternity Portraits

  • It helps mothers feel confident. Many women don’t feel their most glamorous during pregnancy, even when they look absolutely radiant.

  • It protects comfort and safety. Being aware of pose difficulty, balance, and fatigue is crucial.

  • It creates elegance. Small adjustments—hand placement on the belly, angles that highlight shape, guiding the flow of fabric—bring out the natural beauty of pregnancy.

  • It builds emotional depth. A calm voice and gentle direction allow a mother to connect with her baby during the session.

I often say softly:

  • “Let your hands rest where they feel most natural.”

  • “Take a slow breath and imagine holding your baby for the first time.”

  • “Lift your chin slightly, beautiful… perfect.”

The goal is not to pose her like a model but to create a moment where she feels celebrated, held, and seen. When mothers feel safe and supported, the glow you see in the final images isn’t lighting—it’s emotion.

Being Soft-Spoken with Children: The Secret to Natural Family Portraits

Working with children is its own world, and I genuinely love it. Kids respond best not to force or pressure but to kindness, humor, and a peaceful tone.

Over the years, I’ve learned that being soft-spoken isn’t just a personality trait—it’s a strategy. Children mirror the energy you give them. If you are calm, they feel calm. If you stay patient, they trust you.

A soft voice builds connection. It reassures them:

  • “You’re doing so great.”

  • “Can you show me your best smile?”

  • “Want to spin around with Mom real quick?”

These small, gentle invitations bring out genuine expressions. No child wants to hold a stiff pose—they want to play, explore, move, and feel seen. When they sense the session is more of a game than a chore, their natural personality shines, and parents end up with photos full of life and joy.

This approach also creates a better experience for the parents. When children are relaxed, the entire family relaxes. Sessions flow naturally, and the resulting portraits feel effortless.

Why Direction Creates a Better Overall Experience

Giving direction isn’t about control—it’s about creating comfort. My role as a photographer is not just technical; it’s emotional. People need to feel guided, supported, and appreciated. When I step into that responsibility, the energy of the entire session changes.

Direction Creates:

  • Confidence

  • Natural expressions

  • Connection between subjects

  • Relaxation and trust

  • Images that feel genuine and timeless

Whether I’m photographing a wedding at golden hour, a maternity session at Torrey Pines, or a family playing in the waves at La Jolla Shores, I approach each moment the same way:

With calmness.
With kindness.
With intention.
With the belief that everyone deserves to feel beautiful in front of the camera.

When my clients leave a session telling me, “That was actually fun,” that’s when I know I’ve done my job.

Because great photography isn’t just about the picture—it’s about the experience that creates it.
