The Challenge at Balboa Park That Made Me a Better Family Photographer

Nov 12, 2025 | Personal Experience

One of the most memorable challenges I’ve had during a San Diego family portrait session happened at Balboa Park on a busy Saturday afternoon. I had arranged to meet the Maxim family near the reflecting pool — a spot I love for its soft light and beautiful background. I told them what I was wearing, described the exact location, and even sent a pin on the map. But when I arrived, there were easily a few hundred people around, and to make things more interesting, there were at least ten other photographers doing family sessions at the same time. Everyone had cameras, everyone was directing groups, and I realized that my directions weren’t specific enough in such a crowded setting. We spent nearly twenty minutes walking in circles trying to find each other — laughing about it afterward, but it definitely tested my patience and timing.

Now, I approach sessions like this differently. When photographing family portraits in San Diego, especially in popular spots like Balboa Park, La Jolla Cove, or Coronado Beach, I not only share my outfit description but also send a short video clip of the meeting point and a marked photo reference of the exact area. This small step saves a lot of confusion and stress for families. It also helps me keep the momentum of the shoot, allowing us to start with smiles and confidence instead of frustration. Every experience teaches me something new, and this one reminded me that communication before the session is just as important as lighting and composition during it — especially when creating timeless family portraits in a busy San Diego location.
